Tate Shots: Quentin Blake

Sir Quentin Saxby Blake is an English cartoonist, illustrator and children’s writer. He is known best for illustrating books written by Roald Dahl.

Blake uses inks and watercolours to create his artwork, I like his work because there is so much happening in each picture that every time you look at them you see something new or look at something in a different way.

‘I do a freewheeling sort of drawing that looks as though it is done on the spur of the moment. However even a single drawing needs a certain amount of preparation and planning’. – Quentin Blake

Blake uses traditional drawing methods including quills and scalpels instead of digital illustration to create his pictures. He prefers it this way as you feel the gesture of the character which you cannot do on a screen. one of my personal favourites include the image below, I like this illustration the best because there is so much going on in the picture with so many colours and scenes going on in the picture, my favourite is the black bird drawing the little girl.

His drawings may look quite rushed and sometimes incomplete. However, I prefer this style of drawing as it shows the simple outlines of a human but is still able to show emotion through body language and facial expressions.
